Coast, dry plains, hill country

Sri Lanka stacks a beach, a leopard and a tea mountain into the same week.

Which Yala jeep actually finds the leopards. What the Kandy to Ella train costs and when the seats go on sale. Reviews of every tour you can book on the island, priced and timed.

Which park

Yala for leopards, Udawalawe for elephants, Minneriya for the whole herd at once.

Every jeep leaves before dawn and every park sells a different animal. Three kinds of safari day, what a seat costs in each, and which one fits the week you have.

Where to base yourself

Colombo, Kandy, Ella, Galle. Pick three and let the island come to you.

A port capital, a temple city, a rock in the dry zone, a tea town on a ridge, a cold colonial hill station and a Dutch fort on the south coast. Six places to sleep, and the best day out from each.

The Cultural Triangle

Sigiriya, Dambulla and two ruined capitals, all within an hour of each other.

The dry zone in the middle of the island holds the oldest things in the country: a fifth-century palace on a granite plug, five caves of painted Buddhas, and two abandoned royal cities with their tanks still working. Most of it goes as day trips from one base.

How you get around

In Sri Lanka the tuk-tuk is not the transfer. It is the tour.

A three-wheeler with a driver who stops wherever you point costs less than a taxi and sees ten times more of the city. Colombo and Kandy both run half-day circuits with every entry ticket already built into the price.

The price of a day

What a day out in Sri Lanka actually costs.

Every tour on the site, grouped by what you pay. A good number of the island’s best days come in under the price of a hotel dinner.

Under $50

Tuk-tuk city circuits, cave temple entries, cooking classes and a reserved seat on the train up to Ella.

$50 to $150

Full-day safaris with meals, the whale boats out of Mirissa, and the long Sigiriya runs from Kandy or the coast.

$150 and up

A driver and vehicle for the week, multi-day loops of the island, and the chartered jeeps that are through the park gate first.

Only here

Three Sri Lankan things that do not travel.

Beaches and ruins turn up all over Asia. A court built on top of a two-hundred-metre rock, a train that spends seven hours climbing through tea, and the leaf that gave the island its trading name do not.

Fifth century

The Rock at Sigiriya

A king moved his court to the top of a two-hundred-metre granite plug in the fifth century, had the sheer western face painted with frescoes of court women, and built the final staircase so that it climbed in through the mouth of a brick lion. The paws are still there on the halfway terrace. The rest is roughly twelve hundred steps of exposed stone and metal, which is why every operator on the island leaves before seven.

Kandy to Ella

The Blue Train Through the Tea

The line from Kandy to Ella climbs through tea estates for the better part of seven hours and nobody on board is in a hurry about it. Reserved seats in the observation car open thirty days out and are gone the same morning. Second class unreserved means standing in an open doorway with your feet over the drop, which is where most of the photographs come from anyway.

Ceylon

The Leaf the Island Is Named For

A fungus killed the coffee in the 1870s, the British replanted the hills above Kandy with tea, and the island has been shipping Ceylon ever since. A factory visit walks the leaf from the withering troughs through the rollers to the sorting mesh in about forty minutes. The tasting at the end is where you learn that the grade sold at home is mostly the dust.

Book before you fly

Four Sri Lankan bookings that will not wait for you.

Most of this island can be arranged the night before from a guesthouse veranda. These four run on railway reservation windows, two monsoons and a national park that shuts itself for the dry season.

  1. 01Kandy to Ella Train Tickets – Reserved SeatsReserved seats on the Kandy to Ella line open thirty days ahead, and the observation car is gone within hours of release.
  2. 02Whales and Dolphins Watching-Luxury Super Grade Cruiser(Hotel Pick up offered)Boats out of Mirissa run roughly November to April. Once the southwest monsoon sets in the sea is too rough and the season stops.
  3. 03Yala National Park Safari Tours: Morning/Evening/Full DayYala Block 1 closes for about six weeks from the start of September while the park dries out. Jeeps move to the other blocks and get scarce.
  4. 04Sigiriya and Dambulla Day Trip with SafariThe rock opens at seven and there is no shade anywhere on the stairs. The early departures are the only cool ones and they fill first.
Two monsoons

It is never raining on both Sri Lankan coasts at once.

The southwest monsoon soaks Colombo, Galle and the hill country from May to September. The northeast one takes Trincomalee and the whole east from October to January. Whichever half is wet, these are the days that carry on regardless: a kitchen, a cave, a workshop, a factory floor.

The Sri Lankan table

Rice and curry arrives as ten bowls, not one.

Coconut sambol, dhal, jackfruit, a fried fish, three vegetables you have never met and a mound of red rice. The classes in Ella and Kandy start at the market stall and finish with you eating everything you cooked.
